Bahrain Reaffirms Commitment to Sustainable Public Transport on World Public Transport Day

Manama: Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, has emphasized Bahrain's ongoing efforts to advance and enhance the sustainability of its public transport system. This commitment aligns with international best practices and supports the country's aspirations for more connected and efficient cities, in pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the Minister highlighted the significance of World Public Transport Day, initiated by the International Association of Public Transport, as a platform to reaffirm the essential role of mass transit systems. Such systems are crucial for promoting sustainable urban mobility, improving traffic flow, and enhancing community connectivity. Dr. Shaikh Abdulla stressed Bahrain's dedication to engaging in international initiatives that advocate for sustainable urban mobility and the adoption of its objectives.

The Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications is focused on strategic goals that include the ongoing development of land transport infrastructure, diversification of public transport options, improvement of operational efficiency, and support for policies that encourage greater public transport use. These initiatives are consistent with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and national plans to develop an integrated transport network aimed at improving traffic flow, increasing mobility efficiency, and achieving carbon neutrality targets by 2060.

Significant progress has been made in Bahrain's public transport network, with over 600 bus stops covering more than 39,500 kilometers daily across 26 routes. Since its redevelopment in 2015 through to March 2026, the network has served over 116 million passengers, indicating growing reliance and public confidence in its efficiency.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla also pointed out the resilience of the public transport system, which has maintained operations under all circumstances, including during Iranian attacks. In March 2026, the system achieved an 80% operating rate, with 782,931 journeys and a daily average of 25,256 journeys, ensuring uninterrupted mobility and meeting daily needs.

The Minister praised ongoing development initiatives in collaboration with Bahrain Public Transport Company. These initiatives aim to improve network efficiency, enhance service quality, and increase reliability and ease of use, thereby reinforcing public transport as a sustainable and effective option that supports social stability.

Dr. Shaikh Abdulla concluded by commending the dedicated efforts of national personnel and employees in the land transport sector for their pivotal role in delivering essential services that directly impact people's daily movement and quality of life.
