Manama:MP Zainab Abdulameer Khalil participated in a meeting of the Bureau of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs during the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania.
According to Bahrain News Agency, Bahrain's Parliamentary Division submitted an emergency item to the assembly focused on protecting freedom of navigation, maritime security, and international trade through international waterways, particularly the Strait of Hormuz and Bab Al Mandab.
The delegation emphasized that this is a matter of international concern involving the United Nations' role in maintaining peace and security and upholding international law. Given that over 80% of global merchandise trade is transported by sea, disruptions in major waterways could significantly impact supply chains, energy and food prices, and global economies.
Bahrain's delegation stressed the importance of cooperation between the United Nations and national parliaments to uphold international law and ensure the security of international waterways. The meeting also reviewed UN mechanisms for conflict prevention and resolution, including the Peacebuilding Commission, strategic partnerships with regional entities, and the presence of special envoys and mediators.
