Bahrain Condemns Houthi Attacks and Calls for UN Action

New York:Bahrain has strongly condemned the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, including those targeting the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah, with particular emphasis on the power distribution station serving the Prophet's Mosque. The Kingdom emphasized that these attacks violate the sanctity of Islam's holiest sites.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Bahrain's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jamal Fares Al Rowaiei, expressed these concerns during a UN Security Council briefing on Yemen, which was also attended by the UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg.

Ambassador Al Rowaiei criticized the Houthis for their continued military escalation in Yemen, which is in violation of the ceasefire. This escalation has displaced over 145,000 people and worsened the humanitarian situation. He highlighted that the Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia, violations against Yemeni citizens, and threats to navigation in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Red Sea are breaches of international law and Security Council Resolution 2722 (2024). He also condemned missile and drone attacks on civilian airports in Saudi Arabia and Yemen, noting the threat they pose to civilians and aviation safety.

Bahrain reiterated its full solidarity with Saudi Arabia and its right to defend its sovereignty and security as per the UN Charter. It also reaffirmed support for Yemen's legitimate government and its efforts to restore state authority and stability. Bahrain welcomed the recovery of the Bab el-Mandeb area and strategic locations by government forces and warned about ongoing threats from Houthi missiles, drones, explosive boats, and naval mines to maritime security.

The Kingdom urged the Security Council to take action beyond mere condemnations to ensure peace and security in Yemen and the region. It called for strengthening the Yemen sanctions regime in the upcoming review and closing channels through which the Houthis acquire weapons and their components.
