Bahrain Chairs Extraordinary Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting on Iran’s Illegal Attacks Against Arab States

Manama: Dr. Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani, Minister of Foreign Affairs, chaired an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Arab Foreign Ministers, held via videoconference, to address Iran's attacks against Arab states. The meeting was held as part of the Kingdom of Bahrain's presidency of the current session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level.

According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting was attended by Arab Foreign Ministers and Ahmed Aboul Gheit, Secretary-General of the League of Arab States. Dr. Al Zayani highlighted that Iran's attacks, which involved thousands of ballistic and cruise missiles as well as daily drone strikes over forty days, aimed to cause significant destruction. He stressed these actions violate international law and disregard United Nations principles, threatening regional and international peace and security.

Dr. Al Zayani emphasized the importance of a collective stance to ensure Iran's compliance with international resolutions, including UN Security Council Resolution (2817) of 2026, Human Rights Council Resolution (1/61), and a resolution by the International Maritime Organisation. He underscored the need to address harm to civilians and infrastructure, citing violations of international humanitarian law and the necessity for accountability.

The Foreign Minister also addressed Iran's closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which disrupted maritime traffic and affected global trade and energy security. He called for Iran to be held accountable for these actions, which violate international law and the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The resolution adopted by the Council condemned Iran's missile and drone attacks on territories of multiple Arab states, describing them as violations of sovereignty and breaches of international law. It reaffirmed the right of affected states to pursue action through international institutions to condemn the attacks and hold Iran accountable. The resolution also condemned Iran's threats to close strategic straits, considering them violations of navigation freedom and international security.

The resolution encouraged the UN Security Council to maintain regional and international peace and security, ensuring accountability for attacks on civilian facilities. It reaffirmed the right of Arab states to self-defense under the UN Charter, emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts in conveying the resolution's content to international and regional organizations.
