Bahrain Backs Humanitarian Mediation at UN Security Council on Ukraine

New york: The Kingdom of Bahrain welcomed the announcement of a temporary ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine mediated by the United States, stressing the importance of such steps in advancing dialogue and supporting a comprehensive diplomatic solution that contributes to security and stability in Europe. This came in Bahrain's statement delivered by Ambassador Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, during a UN Security Council session on the latest developments in Ukraine.

According to Bahrain News Agency, Ambassador Alrowaiei praised mediation efforts related to prisoner exchanges and humanitarian initiatives, including the recent mediation by the United Arab Emirates, which resulted in a new prisoner exchange involving 410 detainees. This brings the total number of released captives through UAE mediation to 7,101 across 23 operations.

He also commended the mediation efforts of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in securing the release and exchange of detainees between Russia and Ukraine, as well as Qatar's efforts to reunite Ukrainian and Russian children with their families, describing these initiatives as positive humanitarian contributions that support de-escalation and enhance prospects for a peaceful resolution.

The Ambassador warned against the growing use of drones in armed conflicts, particularly when their impact extends beyond the parties directly involved, potentially increasing regional tensions and widening the scope of conflict.

He further stressed the importance of the UN Secretary-General's call for an immediate, full, unconditional, and lasting ceasefire as a first step toward a just, sustainable, and comprehensive peace in line with the UN Charter, international law, and relevant UN resolutions.

Ambassador Alrowaiei reaffirmed Bahrain's support for all regional and international initiatives aimed at ending the war through dialogue and peaceful means, including US-led mediation efforts for a permanent ceasefire, and concluded by emphasising Bahrain's support for all efforts that promote dialogue and diplomatic solutions to achieve lasting peace in Ukraine and strengthen international peace and stability.
