Tehran: Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir will visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday, as announced by Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei. The announcement was reported by Anadolu Ajansi (AA), citing state news agency. According to Radio Free Europe Radio Liberty, the visit by Munir and his accompanying delegation aims to enhance bilateral cooperation and reinforce Pakistan's efforts in promoting peace and security in the region, as highlighted by Baqaei in remarks carried by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). During his visit, Munir is expected to engage in discussions with senior Iranian officials. Pakistan has historically played a significant mediating role between Iran and the United States (US) throughout periods of conflict, maintaining communication with both nations. Recently, the US and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17 and initiated negotiations towards a final agreement. However, these talks have faced obstacles due to disagreements over s ecurity guarantees and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global energy supplies and trade. Between July 8 and July 24, tensions escalated as the US and Iran exchanged military strikes. The US launched attacks on targets within Iran, prompting Tehran to retaliate by targeting US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
