Arusha:The Bahrain Parliamentary Division delegation, led by Jamal Mohammed Fakhro, First Deputy Chairman of the Shura Council, participated in a meeting of the Arab Parliamentary Group on the sidelines of the 153rd General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Tanzania.
According to Bahrain News Agency, the meeting reviewed and endorsed Bahrain's proposal for an emergency agenda item focused on ensuring freedom of navigation and maritime security. This measure aims to maintain the flow of international trade through maritime routes and straits in alignment with international law, urging urgent parliamentary action on the issue.
The session was chaired by Khalid bin Hilal Al Maawali, Chairman of the Shura Council of Oman, and attended by Mohamed bin Ahmed Al Yammahi, President of the Arab Parliament. It also featured presentations from candidates for the IPU Presidency, including Sahiba Gafarova of Azerbaijan, Milton Dick of Australia, and Rojo Edwards Silva of Chile.
Additionally, the meeting covered the agenda items for the IPU General Assembly, allowing participants to exchange views on regional challenges and crisis management. Dr. Hamda bint Hassan Al Sulaiti from Qatar presented an update on the work of the IPU Executive Committee since the previous assembly.
The group also agreed on nominations for Arab Group representatives to fill vacant positions on the IPU's standing and subsidiary committees.
