Al-Sudani directs to establish museums for Iraqi national and cultural symbols

Baghdad: Prime Minister, Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani opened the Sheikh Ahmed Al-Waeli Museum and Center, directing the establishment of museums for Iraqi national and cultural symbols.

The Prime Minister’s Media Office said in a statement, ‘Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani opened today, Saturday, the museum and center of the scholar Sheikh Dr. Ahmed al-Waeli (may God have mercy on him), in the Karkh area in Baghdad, which was completed by the Municipality of Baghdad after it took possession of the late man’s house at the initiative of his family, and completely rehabilitated, while preserving its heritage character.

The statement added, “Al-Sudani wandered around the museum and viewed its halls, which included the legacy of Sheikh Al-Waeli, his books and personal belongings, his papers, blogs, manuscripts of his poetry, pictures and recordings of the Sheikh during his stay in Syria and Kuwait, his meetings with sheikhs and scientific and cultural figures, and part of his personal library, which the rest
of them are kept in the Holy Shrine of Imam Ali, all of which constitute prominent milestones in his life, which is rich in knowledge and culture.

The statement explained, “The Prime Minister met with the family of Sheikh Al-Waeli, and directed that all development requirements be provided for the museum. He also directed that the Baghdad Municipality work to establish museums for the most prominent national and cultural figures who constitute the memory of Iraq and a prominent point in our contemporary history.”

Al-Sudani pointed to the impact of the late Al-Waeli, his distinguished role as dean of the Husseini pulpit, and his reformist rhetorical efforts calling for good morals and social peace, and calling for the approach of the family of the Messenger of God (may God bless him and his family and grant them peace).

The statement added, “The scholar Al-Waeli lived in this house in 1960 when he first moved to Baghdad until he went into exile in 1979. It was confiscated by the dictatorial regime in 1981,
and his son, the martyr Muhammad Hussein, was executed.”

Al-Sudani confirmed that the conversion of the house into a museum began in agreement with the Sheikh’s family in 2014, and in 2023, and in line with the government’s approach to preserving the cultural heritage of the capital, Baghdad, and its symbols, all requirements and necessities were completed to rehabilitate the house and transform it into a museum and cultural center.
