The Head of the Strategic Center for Human Rights in Iraq, Dr. Fadel Al-Gharawi, announced the arrest of 38,000 drug dealers and drug holders in Iraq within three years.
Al-Gharawi said in a statement: In accordance with Resolution 42/112 of December 7, 1987, the General Assembly decided to celebrate June 26 as the International Day against the Use of Drugs and Illicit Trafficking in order to enhance work and cooperation in order to achieve the goal of establishing an international community free from the use of drugs.
Al-Gharawi confirmed that the General Directorate of Narcotics Affairs of the Ministry of Interior in Iraq arrested (38) thousand drug dealers and possessors during three years, noting that the year 2022 witnessed the arrest of (17) thousand drug dealers and drug holders, including (123) foreigners, while the amount of materials reached Half a ton of all types of drugs (18) million pills were seized.
He explained that the year 2024 witnessed the arrest of (7,000) drug dealers and possessors,
and the seizure of (12) tons of drugs and psychotropic substances.
Al-Gharawi confirmed that the rate of abuse in poor areas reached (17%) and that the highest rates of abusers’ ages were from (15-30) years, noting that the most abused substance in Iraq is crystal (37.3%) and Captacone (34, 35%) and other types reached (28.35%).
He added that the year 2022 witnessed the destruction of (5 thousand tons) of narcotics and psychotropic substances, 54 million narcotic pills, 31 thousand ampoules, and 9 thousand bottles of various drugs.
He added that the year 2023 witnessed the destruction of large quantities of narcotics and psychotropic substances amounting to two tons, one hundred and eighteen kilograms, and three hundred and eighty-six grams, in addition to four million nine hundred and thirty-four thousand, one hundred and thirty-two narcotic tablets.
He stated that the year 2024 witnessed the destruction of the quantity amounting to (42,322,380) forty-two kilograms, three hundred and twenty-two grams, an
d three hundred and eighty milligrams of a group of various narcotic substances and psychotropic substances, and (772) seven hundred and seventy-two tablets of a group of various narcotic substances and psychotropic substances.
Al-Gharawi called on the government to adopt June 26 of each year as the National Day for the Prevention of the Drug Threat. He also called for raising the level of the General Directorate of Drug Affairs to the level of an agency and linking it to the Minister of the Interior, launching a national campaign to prevent the drug danger, strengthening international cooperation in combating it, and amending the drug law to include It guarantees tightening sentences against drug traffickers and establishing clinics to rehabilitate addicts through investment.
