A UN Official Calls For Redoubling Efforts To Prevent The Conflict In Sudan From Turning Into A Civil War

The United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs, Martin Griffiths, stressed the need to redouble efforts to ensure that the conflict in Sudan does not turn into an endless civil war with dire consequences for the region.

In a statement, Griffiths warned that the Sudanese people have suffered and cannot wait in light of the indescribable suffering in the midst of the violence that is tearing their country apart.

“With the conflict entering its fourth month between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, the fighting is getting fiercer, making it more difficult to reach the millions of people who need urgent humanitarian aid,” he said.

“We are doing everything we can to deliver life-saving supplies, but we cannot operate under the barrel of a gun,” he added.

The UN official called on the two parties to abide by the Declaration of Commitments they signed in Jeddah to protect civilians and respect international humanitarian law.
