7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Tonga Islands in South Pacific


Tonga: A 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Tonga islands on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences reported.



According to Bahrain News Agency, the centre initially recorded the quake at a magnitude of 6.6 before updating its assessment. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center warned of the potential for hazardous tsunami waves within 300 kilometres of the epicentre along Tonga’s coasts.



Tonga is a kingdom in Polynesia comprising more than 170 islands in the South Pacific.
